Stargazing @ Stonelick Lake - Saturday November 6th

The days are getting shorter and twilight's around 7:30-8:00, early enough to get in lots of observing and still get home at a reasonable hour.
The predictions are for clear skies and cold temps with a low of 24 degrees. Bundle up, bring coffee/cocoa - anything that will help you stay warm.

Stargazing @ Stonelick Lake - Saturday October 30th

It's getting cold at night but in a few months we'll be wishing for low 30s. The Moon won't be up till late and Jupiter's high at dusk.

It's also getting dark earlier and we'll try to arrive & set up around 7:30, have to leave enough time to eat, load the car and drive out.

Stargazing at Stonelick Lake - Saturday October 9th

The weather's just about perfect.
Sunset is at 7:07 & it's almost dark by 7:30.

I've talked to a bunch of people interested
in heading out, it should be a great night.

Stargazing @ Stonelick Saturday Sept.4th

The weather looks like it's gonna cooperate & the summer objects are well placed
for early viewing. We'll be setting up around 8:30 or dusk.

Saturday the 14th - doesn't look good

The predictions are calling for a 50% chance of rain & mostly cloudy skies.
On the other hand one novice astronomer , Rob Watson, saw 72 bright Perseids Thursday, and we had a great night last Sat. Three good nights in a week might be to much to ask for.

Perseid Meteor Shower - Thursday, Aug. 12th

Stonelick State Park has given us permission to observe one of the years best meteor showers. Last Saturday we watched the Milky Way climb across the sky as occasional stray meteors blazed overhead. We should have some scopes set up by 9:00, but people come and go all night.
Everyone's welcome, consider bringing a blanket, lawn chairs, beverages and snacks.

Stonelick Stargazing Saturday Aug. 7th

We've got moderate temps, lower humidity and twilight at a better hour. Basically perfect.
Sunset's around 8:40 and there's enough to look at all night.
I've already talked to around 20 folks planning on going out .

Stargazing tonight @ Stonelick Lake

Once again the predictions are all over the board. It's supposed to be mostly
cloudy at the moment but the Sun's shining in a blue sky. We might have a
thunderstorm this evening and then mostly cloudy skies or then again it might
blow through and leave the sky mostly clear.
I'm thinking about going out for an hour or two around 9:00pm if it looks like
the sky will clear but doubt I'll drive out if it looks bad.

Stargazing Saturday July 10th - Stonelick Lake State Park

The weather's cooperating for a change. Mostly clear with a low around 65 is the general consensus.
If I remember right - bug spray, dew zappers, coffee and lawn chairs seemed to be appreciated.
We'll be setting up around twilight, 9:00 ~ 9:30pm. The public's welcome and it's free. It's a great opportunity to talk to local amateur astronomers and see the summer deep sky objects as well as Venus & Saturn.
I've recently changed my Internet/Phone provider but will answer email sent to this address and update the Observatory blog through Sat.

Stargazing This Weekend- July 2,3 &4

The clearsky clock has never looked better. http://cleardarksky.com/c/SlkCcObOHkey.html?1
A couple people asked about observing this weekend but I didn't know what to say. If you're interested in going to Stonelick and want to leave feedback I can forward the info to others. Unfortunately I have to work till late Friday, not sure of my plans.

Stargazing @ Stonelick Lake - Saturday April 17th

The predictions look great - clear and cool. There's winter stuff in the West, spring galaxies near the meridian, M3 & 5 rising in the East. The sun's setting around 8:30 and by 9:00 it's dark enough to observe.
This is a great opportunity to view planets, galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and stars. It is also a good opportunity to see numerous types of telescopes in action, ask questions and become involved in the fascinating world of astronomy. Most amateur astronomers are more than willing to have you look through their telescopes as well as explain astronomical concepts, from basic to complex.

Stargazing - Saturday April 10th @ Stonelick State Park

The weather predictions look great for Sat night. Clear with a low of 41.
The sky's getting dark around 8:30 and there's still some great winter objects high in the sky. Galaxies are rising at dusk and before too long the summer nebulas are well placed - it's a great time to brush up rusty observational skills.

Clear skies Thursday & Friday - rain Saturday night
I've talked to a few people observing tonight and some planning on Friday night. This will probably be the best chance at seeing the entire Messier list in one night we'll have this year. Folks usually arrive around dusk and bring coffee or hot chocolate, if you're heading out dress for a low in the forties.

Stargazing at Stonelick State Park - Saturday January 16th

Once again we have clouds and rain in the area & can't see anything. If you still have an interest in astronomy after this stretch of inclement weather, check out the review by Shekar Govindaswamy “Forbidden Lines: Mini [OIII] Filter Shootout” at Cloudynights.com http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=2129 .
